Her One and Only by Becky Wade & Close to You by Kara Isaac

Her One and Only, Becky Wade

Gray Fowler, star NFL tight end, is being pursued by a stalker, so his team hires a protection agency to keep Gray under the watch of a bodyguard at all times. When Gray meets Dru Porter, an agent assigned to him, he's indignant. How can an attractive young female half his size possibly protect him?

But Dru's a former Marine, an expert markswoman, and a black belt. She's also ferociously determined to uncover the identity of Gray's stalker. And she's just as determined to avoid any kind of romantic attachment between herself and the rugged football player with the mysterious past. But the closer they get to finding the stalker, the closer they grow to each other. As the danger rises, can Dru and Gray entrust their hearts--and their lives--to one another?

My Thoughts:

Her One and Only is part of The Porter Family series and follows the youngest Porter, Dru. This was my first introduction into Ms. Wade's writing and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. This was probably one of the first romantic suspense novels that I've read where both plot lines were balanced equally and realistically. Often times you have characters who are thrust into suspenseful situations who decide to kiss when they should be running from the bad guy ... but Ms. Wade did an excellent job bringing to life the budding romance between body guard and protectee in way that was not only believable but respectable to who the characters are, their positions, and my expectation.

I enjoyed the chemistry between Dru and Gray and found myself rooting for them even when some of the storyline felt predictable--it wasn't enough to make me stop reading! This story has a strong faith element and touches on the subject of physical abuse. While this story is part of a series I didn't feel like I missed anything by reading this one before the others. However, Ms. Wade does a great job of bringing in the other Porter family members in a way that will have me reading their stories very soon.

Her One and Only is a great addition to fans of romantic suspense novels as Ms. Wade delivers a story that will have you cheering for more!

Close to You, Kara Isaac

Allison Shire (yes, like where the Hobbits live) is a disgraced academic who is done with love. Her belief in “happily ever after” ended the day she discovered her husband was still married to a wife she knew nothing about. She finally finds a use for her English degree by guiding tours through the famous sites featured in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies.

Jackson Gregory was on the cusp of making it big. Then suddenly his girlfriend left him—for his biggest business competitor—and took his most guarded commercial secrets with her. He’ll do whatever it takes to convince his wealthy great-uncle to invest in his next scheme, which means accompanying him to the bottom of the world to spend three weeks pretending to be a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan, even though he knows nothing about the stories. The one thing that stands between him and his goal is a know-it-all tour guide who can’t stand him and pegged him as a fake the moment he walked off the plane.

My Thoughts:
Oh, my, word. Love. Love. Love this story. As I write this review I have another tab opened up on my computer searching for the first flight I can find to New Zealand. Close to You is Ms. Isaac's debut novel and probably the first novel in its genre that I am head-over-heels in love with (And yes. It's perfectly acceptable to fall in love with books!).

Ms. Isaac introduces us to an incredible cast of characters who literally charmed their way into my heart the minute I started reading their story. Allison Shire is a heroine I can truly admire. Her spit-fire personality drew me to her immediately. And Jackson Gregory, although infuriating at first, is the kind of hero I can believe in. Together, they and the unique secondary cast, weave a comedic story layered with romantic tension, frustration, and had me turning the pages like I would with a thriller.

On top of a great cast, Ms. Isaac celebrates the beauty of her homeland, New Zealand, bringing me deep into the lush landscape created with vivid details that left me wanting more--and not only that she introduced me into the world of Hobbits, Orcs, and Wizards with a delicate balance of all things Tolkien.

Truly, this is an outstanding novel with a unique voice that I could NOT get enough of. I did not want to turn the last page and yet I couldn't help it. In fact, my son tried to sneak a sip of my Starbucks Iced Green Tea just to grab my attention from the book. In his words, "It was the only way I could get you to stop reading."

I cannot wait for more of Kara Isaac's books and I recommend this novel to anyone who can read and for those who cannot--find a friend who'll read it to you! You do not want to miss out on this hilarious, fun, quirky, romance. It'll leave you smiling ... and looking for a flight to New Zealand.
