May Flowers Bring Mother's Day Smiles & A Giveaway!!

May reminds me of warm weather, sweet flowers, and mommas. (Oh, and my husband because his birthday is this month and usually falls on Mother's Day but not this year-I get the holiday all to myself!)

The Mother Letters, Amber C. Haines and Seth Haines
Letters written by mommas to mommas filled with encouragement, reality, love, and hope. This sweet book, geared primarily towards young and new moms, offers a glimpse into the motherhood by mommas from all walks of life. Letters written to the reader reveal what they wish they had known before becoming a mom; what it's like having a child with special needs; the loss of children in the womb and after they've breathed life. They share stories of being in the thick of it complete with gooey slobber dripping down their shoulders and in the prime of it when their precious offspring cuddle in close for some snuggle time.

While I found plenty I could relate with-having been through much of the chaos myself-I felt like the book missed out on reaching moms with older children. There's so much to be said about being knee-deep in spit-up, late night feedings, and sleep deprivation but as a momma who is in the trenches with older kids facing hormones, dating, social media, and hormones (yes, it's worth mentioning twice. It's like stalking through a minefield, at night, with a blindfold, after you get off the merry-go-round) I need some reassurance that this too shall pass. Maybe that'll be their next book?

Just in time for Mother's Day, The Mother Letters, is a great gift for the new mom, mom-to-be, or mommas with littles wrapped around her legs. A reminder that motherhood is a gift, a blessing, and fleeting.

What about you?

Is there advice you were offered before you became a mother? Was it good advice? Funny? Absurd? One of the best pieces of advice I came across comes from the movie Hook, with Robin Williams. There's a scene where he's trying to close a deal on his cell phone while his children are running around the room, making noise, getting into things-basically trying anything to grab his attention. And they get it. But it comes in the form of yelling and the kids are chased out of the room ... disappointed, hurt, and rejected. Peter (Robin Williams's character) is told by his wife:

"We have a few special years with our children, when they're the ones that want us around. After that you're going to be running after them for a bit of attention. It's so fast Peter. It's a few years, and it's over. And you are not being careful. And you are missing it."

I don't know why but these words resonated with me and I've never forgotten them. Now, as I write
this, my oldest daughter is studying for her finals and will be finished with her first year of college.
My second daughter will be taking her SAT's for an early graduation from high school. And my son will be getting his driver's permit. Yep, a little bit of sobbing going on over here.

There are plenty of days when I'm frustrated with this thing called Motherhood but I'm thankful forspecial days (even if it's just one) where we can reflect on the blessing. My three blessings are the best reason to celebrate Mother's Day. They've stretched me in ways I didn't think possible. Made me understand love deeper than anything else. They are the very best of me.
