Hope Prevails by Dr. Michelle Bengtson

Hope Prevails by Dr. Michell Bengtson

As a board-certified neuropsychologist, Dr. Michelle Bengtson sees the devastation of depression. Early on, she practiced the most effective treatments and prescribed them for her clients. But when she experienced depression herself, she found that the treatments she had recommended were lacking. Her experience showed her the missing component in treating depression.

In Hope Prevails, Dr. Bengtson writes with deep compassion, blending her training and faith, to offer readers a hope grounded in God's love and grace. She helps readers understand what depression is, how it affects them spiritually, and what, by God's grace, it cannot do. The result is an approach that offers the hope of release, not just the management of symptoms.

For those who struggle with depression and those who want to help them, Hope Prevails offers hope for the future.

My Thoughts: Hope Prevails is a non-fiction title that dives into something personal. Depression. If you are suffering or know someone who is suffering this book is full of hope. Hope of a future; hope of a promise; hope of survival-the kind of hope that can only come from God.

The devastation of depression has affected me personally through the life of someone I love and this book serves as a reminder that those suffering are not defined by their diagnosis. In fact, Dr. Bengtson provides Biblical truths that contradict the very lies the enemy-our enemy-uses to leave those suffering in the abyss of hopelessness. But it doesn't have to be this way. Dr. Bengtson, as a board-certified neuropsychologist, suggests that to conquer depression we need to be fully aware that the battle is not just physical and psychological but spiritual as well. And I agree.

As someone who has suffered herself, Dr. Bengtson, shares her personal struggles and the lies she believed that kept her drowning in the throes of depression but in each chapter she also affirms that the lies are just that-deceptive words of destruction meant to rob a person of the joy, hope, and peace God promises to each of us. There's a "homework" assignment at the end of each chapter that helps the reader dig deeper into their feelings to discover the truth for themselves along with key Bible verses she strongly suggests for memorization and a play list of inspiring songs meant to uplift the spirit.

This book is full of incredible verses that speak TRUTH and HOPE into the lives of those who need to hear it most. They spoke to me and made me realize that I, too, have been allowing the enemy to have a foothold in areas of my life that I need to take back. "Take your thoughts captive-or your thoughts will take you captive." Whether or not you suffer from depression or know someone who does this book will become a toolbox full of the kind of arsenal needed to battle an enemy constantly on the prowl to destroy us and those we love.
