The Raven by Mike Nappa

The Raven (A Coffey & Hill Novel) by Mike Nappa

As part of his regular street performance, a deception specialist who goes by the name The Raven picks his audience's pockets while they watch. It's harmless fun--until he decides to keep the spare wallet a city councilman doesn't seem to miss, hoping for a few extra bucks. When he finds not money but compromising photos of the councilman and his "personal assistants," The Raven hatches a plan to blackmail the man. However, he quickly finds himself in over his head with the Ukrainian Mafia and mired in a life-threatening plot code-named, "Nevermore."

Private investigators Trudi Coffey and Samuel Hill must scramble to sort out the clues--and their complicated feelings for each other--to rescue The Raven and save hundreds of lives from a wildcard bent on revenge.

My Thoughts:
The Raven is the first in the Coffey & Hill series I've read and Mike Nappa has made me a fan. First, let me say the cover alone on this book is enough to intrigue me but then you turn to page one and I'm  eyeball deep in a story dark and dreary, and I know my laundry, cooking, sleeping, are nevermore ... because I could not put this book down.

I liked the fact that I could pick up this book and not feel like I'm playing catch up with the characters and their stories from a previous book. Mike Nappa does an excellent job introducing me to Trudi Coffey and Samuel Hill and their current case but dropping just enough cookie crumbs to entice me to know what started it all in book #1 (Annabel Lee).

Quick-paced, The Raven is colorful in its cast of characters, setting, and plot. The varying point-of-view from first-person to third-person took me some time getting used to but a few chapters in and I began to enjoy the journey of the Raven through his eyes.

An easy read that was fun, mysterious, and the kind of cynical humor I can appreciate. I'm looking forward to reading Annabel Lee and waiting in anticipation for book #3 in the Coffey & Hill series.

*I received a copy of this book from the publisher. You can purchase your copy of The Raven HERE.
